The Wilderness Project

The Wilderness Project is a group of concerned residents in the northern Piscataquis and Somerset counties have gathered together to create The Wilderness Project - Northern Mainers for the protection of special wild places.  We welcome your participation in protecting special wild places within the Maine Woods.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to advocate for permanent wilderness protection of northern Maine’s special wild places that:

  • Provide peace, quiet, and solitude

  • Provide areas of forest with only natural disturbance, rather than human management

  • Guarantee non-motorized recreation access

  • Protect and promote wildlife habitat.

Current Projects

  • Protecting areas around the 100-Mile Wilderness

  • Protecting Moosehead lake from the Plum Creek development plan
