Help
Organize our Silent Auction
Our first ever Silent Auction last fall was a great
success! Thanks to the volunteers who helped gather items the Sierra Club
raised over $2000 to support our conservation work. This year we want to
make the auction even better but we can only do this with your help. We
need volunteers to:
- Join the Auction Planning Committee and help plan
and organize the auction
- Approach
their favorite stores and ask for items or services to benefit the Maine
Chapter Sierra Club. We will provide instructions and forms for donations.

Be a Part
of the “Street Team”
The summer issue of our
newsletter is out. We currently put copies of the Mainely Sierran in places
we think people will read them – local coffee shops, health food stores,
waiting rooms, etc. If you know of a place that could use some good reading
material, please give me a call.

Protect the
Maine Woods
During deliberative sessions in late May,
the Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC) staff and commissioners discussed
and agreed to new revisions of the Plum Creek development plan that would
pave the way to approval of the largest development proposal in Maine’s
history (should the Seattle-based corporation agree to them).
What is particularly alarming about the
proposed revisions is that LURC staff do not propose to reduce the number of
house lots or resort residences (totaling over 2000 units). Also alarming is
that despite overwhelming ecological impact evidence and public opposition
to any development being sited near Lily Bay State Park (on the eastern
“wilder” side of Moosehead Lake), staff simply recommended concentrating the
heavy resort development on 1358 acres instead of the 4358 acres Plum Creek
asked for.
Write a letter to LURC and express your
disappointment and concern.
LURC will be accepting public comment on the new proposed revisions until
July 11. This is the last chance for the public to offer input on Plum
Creek’s proposal before the final re-zoning decision is made in the fall.
You can read the full set of recommendations
here.
Examples:
“It is shocking that the staff have not
recommended reducing the amount of development around Moosehead Lake”
“I strongly urge LURC to eliminate any
possibility of development at Lily Bay”
Send your letter to:
Land Use Regulation Commission
22 State House Station
Augusta, ME 04333-0022

development or the Maine Woods please contact Karen Woodsum at

Join the
Fundraising Committee
Join the fundraising committee and help to
plan fundraising activities and events for the Maine chapter. Some
fundraising events we have done in the past have been a silent auction, wine
tasting, and selling calendars. We need volunteers to help us to organize
future events to raise money to support our work. The fundraising committee
is a vital part of our conservation efforts, and volunteering for it is a
great way to make a difference.

Full
Circle Fair
Saturday, July 26, 9:00 am – 7:00 pm and
Sunday, July 27, 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Blue Hill Fairgrounds, Blue Hill
The Full Circle Fair is a two-day family
fair to raise money for WERU. There will be a wide variety of performers
featured on two stages, hundreds of vendors, contra dancing, and community
drumming (just to name a few of the highlights). We will have a table there
to promote the Sierra Club and raise awareness of environmental issues in
Maine, and we need volunteers to talk to fairgoers and hand out literature.
This is a great opportunity to enjoy the fair and then help out the Maine
Chapter Sierra Club for a couple of hours. We will provide all the
materials and information you need, and all you have to do is meet cool
people and enjoy the fair! Sign up early to get your pick of days/shifts.
