Fuel Cells For CarsA new program between the US government and the nation’s automakers, Freedom CAR, will replace the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV), developed in 1994 to advance technologies to create an affordable family sedan that could be driven 80 mi/gal. of gas. Fuel cells are considered the most promising technology to replace the internal combustion engine. While mass production is not expected for 10 to 20 years, at the recent North American International Auto Show, General Motors unveiled the AUTOnomy, a new concept vehicle in fuel cell development. The innovated new design would contain not only the fuel cells but also the vehicle's entire power train, eliminating the need for an engine compartment. The engine space could then contain impact-absorbing materials; further protecting it’s occupants. |
