John Muir
Birthday Party - April 18, 2008
Members
and friends of the Maine Chapter gathered to celebrate the birthday of John
Muir, the founder of the Sierra Club. Paul Tukey,
founder and publisher of People, Places, and
Plants magazine and author of
The Organic Lawn Care
Manual, spoke about environmentally
friendly alternatives to traditional lawn care practices.
Earth Hour - March 29,
2008
Chapter
volunteers organized the city of Portland to join in this worldwide effort to
turn off the lights for one hour to send a message about the need for action to
address global warming. The event culminated with a rally in Monument
Square. Portland Mayor, Ed Suslovic, spoke at the rally about Portland's
commitment to sustainability.
2007
Annual Dinner - November 9,
2007
Our
Annual dinner and Awards ceremony was a great success. Over 115 people
came to our dinner at the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport to celebrate our successes
over the past year.
Bath Heritage Days Parade -
July 1, 2007
Cool
Communities volunteers marched in the Bath Heritage Days parade and raised
awareness of global warming. They won first prize in the parade for their
float.
2006
Office Warming & John Muir Birthday - April 21, 2006
Our
office party celebrating our move to 44 Oak Street and John Muir's birthday was
a tremendous success! There were lots of great people, yummy food, and
birthday cake. Take a look at some pictures of the event and check out the

Rall y
around the Federal Budget - October 31, 2005
The Sierra Club teamed up with over 80 Maine
organizations around federal budget reconciliation, and held media events in
Portland and Bangor.
Arctic Rally in Monument Square - September 15, 2005
In the
midst of a stormy day, the sun came out longer enough for us to have a fantastic
Maine rally to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Over 100 people
turned out, took action by cell phone or pen, held signs and got passing traffic
to honk.
Maine Chapter at the Sierra Summit - September 8-11,
2005
Six
delegates from Maine joined approximately 700 other delegates from chapters,
groups and national committees at the 2005 Summit. Maine’s Delegates were: Nancy
Rich, Joan Saxe, and Darci Schofield representing the Maine Chapter, Vivian
Newman attending as a member of the National Oceans Committee, Carole Haas
representing the National Wildlands Committee, and Susan Sargent attending as a
member of the National Political committee.

News Event - July 12, 2005
See the
Maine Chapter in action as volunteers and staff participate in a nation-wide
campaign to expose the dirty secrets of the ExxonMobile Corporation's and to set
the record straight on their business practices. More information is

Direction
Setting Meeting - July 9, 2005
Direction Setting Session was
organized to inform Sierra Summit delegates of what the Maine chapter thinks is important.
Executive Committee and Sierra Club members met in Rockland to strategize the
future focus of the Maine Chapter.
Spring Allagash Conference - April 30, 2005
Celebrating, Protecting, and Restoring the Allagash
Wilderness Waterway. This conference was organized by members of Citizens to Protect the Allagash
(CPA) and included speakers from a wide variety backgrounds including Alexandra
and Garrett Conover and DOC Commissioner Patrick McGowan.
Save the Filibuster Press Conference - March 16, 2005
Sierra Club participated in a media event with others from the Maine Fair and
Independent Federal Courts Coalition to encourage Senators Olympia Snowe and
Susan Collins to oppose the "nuclear option."
2004
Mercury Press Conference - August 2004
The Sierra Club
teamed up with Environment Maine to raise awareness of Mercury pollution in
Maine's waters.
Women's Katahdin Trip - June 2004
"A trip
to climb Katahdin had been planned by Sierra Club women for months in advance.
However, when the day to depart came along, weather was not on the side of

Earth Day in Wells - April 2004
