This slide show presentation lays out the reasons why
local communities are opposing LNG terminals.
Casco Bay, ME
http://www.savecascobay.org/
This organization and site have been created because Hope Island, Harpswell,
Cousins Island, and other Casco Bay islands were being considered as sites
for an LNG facility. Good source for news and links. From the site: "At this point there is a tendency to feel the crisis is
over for a terminal in Casco Bay. However, as we all know there is still
discussion and the possibly that another site will be identified. After much
consideration, the
Board of Directors of Save Casco Bay does not feel we are in the clear.
Until the pipeline in Maine reaches its full potential we are not free from
an LNG threat to our bay."
Harpswell, ME
www.fairplayforharpswell.org
Harpswell, Maine has been targeted as a proposed LNG
site. This
community web site was created over concerns about the proposal.

In addition to
the above Harpswell site there is the Anchor Community Forum. Very active
discussion including a review of the contract currently being considered.

Fishing Families for Harpswell is a non-profit
organization comprised of Harpswell, Maine area fisherman, their families
and supporters. FFFH was founded in direct response to, and in opposition
of, the proposed pipeline and liquefied natural gas plant known as "Fairwinds".

The Coalition for Responsible Siting of LNG Facilities
is a broad based organization fighting against the foolish siting of LNG
facilities in heavily populated areas. Currently the city of Fall River
Massachusetts has been targeted by Weaver's Cove Energy to site a huge LNG
facility only feet away from a residential neighborhood, a school, at least
2 nursing homes, and family development. This site would also impact a
residential neighborhood.

Vallejo, California was targeted by Shell and Bechtel
as a proposed site in 2002. This web site is the result of an active
community opposition.

The National Association of Regulatory Utility
Commissioners (NARUC) is a non-profit organization founded in 1889. Its
members include the governmental agencies that are engaged in the regulation
of utilities and carriers in the fifty States, the District of Columbia,
Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. NARUC's member agencies regulate the
activities of telecommunications, energy, and water utilities.

The BPPWG advocates for the development of
environmentally sustainable energy facilities in the U.S.-Mexico border
region. For the liquified natural gas (LNG) regasification terminals
proposed for the Baja California coast this signifies: offshore and no use
of seawater for regasification.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy-funded project
aims to enhance communication between critical energy stakeholders to ensure
the responsible development and deployment of LNG. In the first phase of the
project, NARUC will begin a series of regional and national dialogues that
will lead to the production of three documents:
1...A comprehensive LNG white paper for state public utility commissions.
2... A draft LNG communication plan for a "case study" state which could be
adapted to other states.
3... A comprehensive LNG primer for state energy and environmental officials.

The Center for Liquefied Natural Gas has attracted more than 50 members,
including LNG asset owners and operators, gas transporter and natural gas
end users. The members are committed to market-based policies and the
importance of expanding and diversifying natural gas supplies. The Center's
overall goals are to:
a... Enhance public education and LNG acceptance by serving as a clearinghouse
for LNG information.
b... Promote efficient regulation for permitting, siting, as well as the
building and operation of LNG facilities and infrastructure.
c... Work toward continued safe and secure operations, stressing industry
guidelines and best practices.

A coalition of 18 Members of Congress from coastal
areas, including Mike Michaud of Maine, filed a legal
brief stating that a provision accompanying the recently passed omnibus
appropriations bill should not be interpreted as giving the Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission (FERC) sole power to approve the location of Liquefied
Natural Gas (LNG) facilities. FERC has made that claim in a case before the
Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in California involving a proposed LNG plant
in Long Beach.

The Patriot Ax, William J. Kelly, AlterNet, March 19,
2004
The risks of planned liquefied natural gas terminals
are being kept secret from residents where terminals are planned because of
recent federal rules issued under the U.S.A. Patriot Act. Local and state
officials on both
coasts and in the Gulf, who are just becoming familiar with the rules, may
be kept from gaining full access to the safety studies -- as well as
residents in affected areas.
